Today, I posted on my site the tenth and last chapter of Losing His Wings, a free story I released in monthly installments for the past year or so. If you haven’t given it a try yet, be sure to do so soon… It’ll disappear by the end of the year so that I can prepare to put it for sale in January.I’ve been writing stories I give away for free for years, and there are several of them available on the Alinar site and on my own website. Others are now for sale, like one of my first ones, Aria & Will which is one of the prizes for today's contest.
Some stories are short, one shot peeks into the lives of characters from my books, like Five Eves, a collection of five very short stories I will release in two weeks as a holidays present to my readers. I enjoy writing these because as a reader I always wonder… what happens after ‘the end’? As a writer, answering that question with glimpses into the future of my characters is always fun and satisfying. I can only hope it’s enjoyable for my readers as well to see what the characters they like best are up to.
Other stories, like Losing His Wings, feature new characters and are more intricate. These are a lot of fun for me to write as well, although for different reasons. Usually, I’m a ‘plotter’, which means that I know when I start writing a story where I’m going with it, and where I’m likely to be when it’s time to write ‘the end’. When I write my monthly freebie, however, I turn into a ‘pantser’. I have a vague direction in mind, but for the most part I write the story as I go. Sometimes, it allows me to work into the story suggestions or requests from the readers who are reading along. The best part though is that I get to be surprised with the readers when my characters do something I wasn’t expecting.
Like I said, I just finished my latest freebie. I’ve already started working on the next one, and I’m very excited about that one. Or the past year and half, my mind has been taken over by two vampires, Andrew and Nicholas, and their son, Jacob. I’ve told this family’s story for the first eighteen years of Jacob’s life in Fangs & Lullabies, and I’ll continue in 2012 with Demons & Lullabies. But I’ll also start posting a different story – the monthly freebie – focused on Jacob when he becomes a grown up.
I hope you’ll join me for this new adventure, but I know some readers hate having to wait between chapters and prefer to read a story all at once. What about you? To enter our contest today, just comment and tell me: do you like to read serial stories? Or does waiting for a new chapter make you want to tear your hair out?

I love book serials, but i go get impatient if I have to wait a long time for the next one to come out. I have been know to wait for all the books to come out and then buy the whole lot at the same time, but this has only happen once, and it was a killer!!
In all honesty I'm probably not for serials.
But then again I hate waiting for books to come out in series. I'm not a waiter. I'm very impatient.
But authors like Kallysten can make it worthwhile.

Same here, I get impatient. Worse sometimes a writer can't go on with a story - also I'm very grateful if a writer sets up free stories - this leaves me grumpy.
So thanks for free stories to all writers, I find it the easiest way to decide if I like the style and want to buy their books.
I like to be able to read a story all the way through at one time. But I am also grateful for the free reads, too! :)
I agree with Midnight Marie's room I like to read series books but I will try to wait until all the books are out. If I can't, I will just reread the previous one along with each new one.
Well both of them. Sometimes a book will end (like movies lol) on a cliffhangar and I'm going "NOT FAIR"!!!! But you have to laugh because it builds the anticipation, just like Christmas.
Every year when I decorate its like opening presents. The memories each piece brings back.
Sorry I regress. Like I said both, can I pick both? lol Thanks, I love your books, I look forward to reading many more!

I prefer to wait for all the chapters as I hate waiting for the next bit of a story I am interested in.

I like both.....
Weekly serial stories are nice because it gives you time to mull over the story, think about what happened and start contemplating about what will come next. Creates a little suspense, like watching soap operas.
Single story books allow you to read on your own schedule.
Serials can be fun but it can also be easy to lose track of them. I agree that weekly are nice because it is easier to remember to check up on them.
i like them if i don't have to wait a long time for new chapters. i now have to read the last chapter of Losing His Wings. can't wait to see how it ends. :)
I like serials but I'm always so impatient so for weekly serials i usually wait until the story is finished and then read it. For series books I'm a real monster especially if i have to wait a really long time before the new book in the series comes out. I distract myself by reading other books, it works for me. rshereifa at yahoo dot com
I'm just getting around to reading this now! But, I know I'll love it as much as everything else ;)
